What the Hell Is Going on with the U.S. Credit Rating

What the Hell Is Going on with the U.S. Credit Rating

On August 5, 2011, Standard and Poor’s downgraded the United States’ credit rating from AAA to AA+. The following week stocks went down and politicians raced for the news cameras so that they could blame one another for America’s financial problems. But what the hell actually happened and how will it affect you? This essay cuts through the jargon and political posturing to answer those questions with clarity and humor. From mortgage rates to potential political changes, Stephen Dove explains why the downgrade happened and what, if anything, it will mean for you. Dove’s step-by-step explanations, helpful metaphors, and clear prose give the reader an understanding of the big picture behind major current events. What the Hell Is Going on with the U.S. Credit Rating shows respect for readers’ intelligence without resorting to convoluted academic writing. This essay does not dumb the news down; it makes it clear and relevant. On August 5, 2011, Standard and Poor’s downgraded the United States’ credit rating from AAA to AA+. Awesome read (again)! Thank you Stephen for letting me know that I don’t need to go into panic mode which is opposite of what all the media makes you think. Great call outs on what I definitely need to be aware of today and in the future. Thanks!

I thought this essay would depress me about the state of our economy, but I actually feel more optimistic than I thought possible given the condition of my retirement account. Dove explains the entire issue with clarity and a fantastic sense of humor that helps me understand not only the problem but also the solution. I’ll be watching Washington closely in the coming weeks and anxiously awaiting Dove’s next WTH essay!

Latest essay in Stephen Dove’s “What the Hell” series explains S&Ps downgrade of the U.S. so that we all can understand it. Probably should be read by Wall Street, like now.
